Our Vision for our Maths Curriculum

INTENT

At CCC we adopt a mastery approach to the teaching of Mathematics to ensure the best progress and outcomes for all of our pupils. We believe this approach allows pupils to develop a depth of understanding and a positive relationship with Mathematics. Mastery supports pupils from all starting points in exploring and explaining mathematical ideas and developing their own connections before developing these connections into a working understanding of key mathematical concepts.  Pupils who develop this flexibility of thinking in KS3 are more readily equipped to meet the demands of the new GCSE curriculum. We seek to develop confident mathematicians and foster a love of the discipline.  

We teach fewer topics at KS3 in order to explore depth of understanding and develop critical mathematical thinkers. This allows us to cover the greater breadth of content at KS4 as good routines of mathematical thinking have been established. Procedural and conceptual variation underpin our pedagogy to unpick the intricacies of the required mathematical methodology. We interleave key learning to maximise retention.

KS3 Content

At KS3 our focus is on developing knowledge and depth of understanding in key Number and Algebra topics to provide a solid basis for KS4. The specific sequence of learning can be seen in the ‘Curriculum Overview’ statements for each Year group which are available on the website.

KS4 Content

KS4 content is split into 30 units of work across Years 9 to 11. These units cover the breadth of the GCSE Maths Curriculum with a focus on both content and application.  The ‘Curriculum Overview’ Statements on the website give details of how the units of work are schedules across Years 9, 10 and 11 allowing time for work on problem solving and application in the latter half of Year 11. 

Homework and Independent Study 

Homework is set weekly to consolidate understanding, help with retrieval of key concepts, develop independence and enrich pupils’ interest in the world of mathematics. In Year 7 the homework is cross-curricular and pupils have some choice of homework task to allow them to explore maths in a way that suits their own interests. Homework may well involve use of technology and pupils have access to a range of online platforms to support their learning. At KS4 we also support students to develop their independent study skills and we expect all pupils to complete a minimum of 15 minutes independent study using Mathswatch every week. 

Google Chrome

Google chrome has a very active part in the maths curriculum. For instance homework can be posted on google classroom which can be both seen and monitored by parents. Further pupils can use chromebook in lessons to work collaboratively through tasks, discussing ideas and building understanding.  

Meeting Every Student’s Needs

The maths curriculum is designed and delivered in a manner to reach all pupils, regardless of ability. In Year 7 we teach pupils in mixed attainment classes allowing us time to make our own assessments of each individual pupils needs and strengths. In Years 8 to 11, we presently teach pupils in groups based on their current attainment. We review these groupings regularly and always strive to find the best environment for each individual pupil to make maximum progress. Pupils can also take part in specialised intervention such as numbers count and success for arithmetic. In Key Stage 4 the department offers intervention in the form of daily classes in place of tutor time and extra revision classes during study leave and after school.  

IMPACT

Assessment 

At both KS3 and KS4 we assess continually in lessons through detailed questioning and carefully designed tasks that allow our teachers to know the depth of understanding pupils have of the current topic. At KS3 we give pupils regular tasks that informally assess their problem solving and communication skills. At the end of each term we also give pupils a more formal assessment of their key mathematical skills to provide them with an idea of the grade they are currently working at. These end of term assessments allow pupils in KS3 to check their progress and identify areas for their own personal development.  

At KS4 each unit of work concludes with an open assessment to test pupils’ understanding and application of the content for that unit. For each unit test, pupils create an A4 page of revision notes (ensuring they have made their notes as they progress through the course). This is an open assessment (and will often be completed as a homework task) in order to assess depth of understanding rather than being a test of recall. As a result of this focus on depth of understanding, the topics on the unit assessments are challenging. 

We conduct formal Progress Tests or ‘Mocks’ at the end of Year 9, and the end of each term in Years 10 and 11.
