It's All Happening in Science

There's been loads going on in the Science department this year, with extra-curricular Science club on Monday lunchtimes and the re-launch of the ever-popular Science Café, under the new banner of STEM café. Science club has been inundated with students keen to make giant bubble structures, dissect rats, grow their own crystal gardens and engineer marshmallow catapults - what else?!

In STEM café meanwhile, we've welcomed our first speaker -  a Space Detective, who gave us all the chance to experience life on the International Space Station.

12 lucky students have been chosen to take part in a special reward trip to the Met Office. The trip is for  an overnight camping stay with a full plan of science fun and adventure.

The students will meet at the Met Office where they will take part in lots of activities, eat,  and sleep in tents provided by the Met Office.

The next morning after breakfast there will be more Met Office activities, including making weather forecasts.

It promises to be a fun and interesting trip!

 On Friday 26th February Stuart Young, a local Vet, visited Cullompton Community College's Science Cafe to give a talk on the day-to-day job of being a Vet.

Stuart ran through the highs and lows of the job, and reminded students about the huge range of animals he has to care for. The difficult parts include not being able to cure an animal, and worse, being able to help an animal when the owner can't afford to pay.  

Stuart also showed students the pneumonia-diseased lungs of a calf he had autopsied that morning.
